First Oil Change – Changes Your Oil in Your New Car

It’s natural to want a shiny, spotless, comfortable vehicle when you’re driving off the lot for your first oil change. But that’s not necessarily the best way to prepare for the long, sometimes tedious job of changing the oil in your vehicle. With so many choices available, you can easily become confused about which type of tankless oil change equipment will work best for you. But this doesn’t have to stop you from changing your own oil! In fact, following a few simple tips can help you get started in the right direction.

 

If you have a new car, there are several things you should do before you even turn the engine off. First, remember to fill out the oil and change the drain plug. Then, disconnect the battery cables. These steps will ensure that you do not ruin your hoses or the engine if you do not have an oil pan or reservoir handy when you begin your first oil change.

 

Next, it’s time to add the new oil and mix it with the old. This is probably best done on a weekend when your vehicle is still warm. Add about five or six quarts of oil, stir thoroughly, and allow it to settle. Check the oil level before beginning your new car oil change.

 

When you have your new car oil changed, you will need to remove the oil filter. You can loosen it using pliers, but make sure you don’t pull the plug while doing so. Remove the oil filter by pushing it slightly toward the firewall. Then pull the filter out and discard it. Repeat the previous step for the oil filter replacement.

 

After changing the oil and removing the drain plug, your engine should be cool enough to slip the new oil in. Run your engine for a few minutes to warm it up. If your car has a remote starter, you can turn it off and just run it under the sun for a few minutes to warm it up.

 

Now that your engine is warm enough, you are ready to start draining the oil. Use a shop vac to suck up the excess oil from the drain plug and drain it away. Then, check the drain line to make sure there is no leak. If you detect a leak, clean it up with an inexpensive solvent. Replace the drain plug and put the cap back on.

 

Next, remove the new oil filter. It is usually found in the drain plug, under the hood, or under the car. It is important to remove it before you begin to change the oil because some older cars have metal or plastic filters that catch the oil. Remove and discard the old filter and put the new one in. Do not use the old oil in your car anymore and consult an expert if you are not certain about the proper procedure. Be sure to follow the directions on the oil filter to ensure proper care of the replacement.

 

Finally, you are ready to begin changing the oil. Stop your car at the gas station and get a good price for the fuel. When you’re finished, do not go back into your vehicle. Take the oil change kit with you to prevent any unwanted surprises!

 

Start under the hood by removing the drain plug. Look for a valve or filter. If you see one, insert it and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the oil past the valve. Then, remove it and set it aside. Your engine will probably need some time to warm up so plug the engine for at least ten minutes. Once the engine warms up, inspect the gasket for any damage.

 

Next, remove the new oil filter. It is usually located under the hood on the firewall. You’ll notice a black oily fluid leaking from the end of the plug, so inspect that area carefully.

 

Plug the car and run through a checklist to make sure that everything was followed correctly. After that, run the engine over a few times to make sure it is cool.
